Vanessa McClelland
Curriculum
Vanessa McClelland obtained her Master of Laws degree from Ghent University in 2016.
During her master studies, she further deepened her knowledge of environmental law, both at regional and international level. Vanessa's interest in environmental law led to her master's thesis research on the interaction between environmental law and indigenous peoples' rights in Arctic and Subarctic regions, with the main focus on Canada.
Thanks to her Canadian roots, Vanessa is multilingual (English, French, Dutch) and conducts administrative and judicial proceedings both in the Flemish Region and the Walloon Region.
Vanessa has been part of the LDR team since February 2016, where she handles a wide range of environmental law matters, including environmental permit procedures, environmental impact assessment, water, soil pollution, animal welfare, environmental monitoring claims, environmental liability and enforcement and so on more.
Furthermore, Vanessa has developed a particular specialisation in wind turbine projects. She assists developers throughout the entire permitting process: advising on the permissibility of projects, reviewing environmental impact assessments, assisting during the administrative permit procedures and defending permits on appeal. She regularly conducts proceedings before the Council for Permit Disputes, the Council of State and the civil courts, and has also conducted proceedings before the Constitutional Court and the European Court of Justice.
Vanessa regularly gives training courses on environmental law topics and, since 2022, she has been a member of the editing team of the EnvironmentConnect module "E-learning Environmental Permit".
